Emulsions

As the formulation vehicle for many materials, from pharmaceuticals to film media, emulsions are universally important.

While particle size influences the bulk physical properties of materials (such as viscosity), its primary application is in determining formulation stability and predicting the shelf-life of the final product.

Particle size measurement can be used to study the breakdown of emulsions over time or under stress conditions. Emulsions are notoriously difficult to dilute without changing their fundamental nature. NIBS technology allows their measurement with little or no dilution, preserving the original state of the system and making results both easier to interpret and more directly applicable.

Zeta potential is used to study the chemistry involved in determining whether or not an emulsion will remain stable in the environment where it will be used.
