Search tips

The Malvern site search is powered by a dedicated Google search engine and so its functionality should be familiar to most people.

However, here are some tips to help you get the most out of your searches:

Google only returns pages that includes all of your search terms – there is no need to include “and” between each term.

  • The order in which the terms are typed will affect the search results.
  • Google will ignore common words such as “where”, “how” and “as”.
  • If a common word is essential to getting the results you want, you can include it by adding a “+” sign in front of it (be sure to add a space before the + sign).
  • A phrase search is useful for refining a search - to get an exact match for your search, add quotes around your search phrase (e.g. “laser diffraction”). Note that common words will be included for a phrase search.
  • Google searches are not case sensitive – “Laser diffraction” and “laser diffraction will give the same results.
  • Google does not use “stemming” or wildcard searches – “laser*” will not yield “lasers”
