Insitec LPS (Liquid Process Sizer)

Off-line, at-line, in-line or on-line particle sizer for wet processes.

Real-time particle size analyzer, based on laser diffraction, for particles in the size range 0.1 to 1000 µm

For solid-liquid or liquid-liquid process streams

  Continuous or batch operating modes

  Automatic or manual operation

Designed to meet industrial requirements for wet particle size analysis, the Insitec LPS can accurately and reproducibly measure a very wide range of process streams, from highly concentrated mineral slurries through to lipid emulsions. A customized approach to each application ensures trouble-free, continuous operation even under the most demanding conditions.
The Insitec LPS particle size analyzer process interface is customized to meet the requirements of the application.

Laser Diffraction
Particle size analysis is performed using the industry standard laser diffraction technology.

Process Interface
The process interface is customized to meet the requirements of the application. All wetted parts are 316SS/PTFE/sapphire.

Sample dilution
A pre-diluter and cascade diluter work together to representatively dilute the sample and avoid dilution shock.

Automation & control
The automation of the analyzer system and connection to the plant control system is facilitated via Malvern Link, a flexible approach accepting custom user interfaces, and a variety of PLC communication protocols

Solutions
The Insitec LPS is suitable for the analysis of a broad range of different process streams, from sectors as diverse as minerals processing and pharmaceutical production.

Summary

The Insitec LPS is a fully integrated solution for wet particle size measurement.

Off-line - for quality control and developmental work

At-line - for process driven analysis as and when it is required

On/In-line - for continuous process monitoring and improved process control

The robust design of the Insitec LPS allows it to provide continuous, real-time, measurement even for concentrated, hot, sticky process streams operating under pressure. Each component of the system – sampler, pre-diluter, cascade diluter, measurement cell, and software – is individually tailored to the process, to optimize the reliability and operability of the final solution. The data produced can be used to improve and/or automate process control generating significant process efficiency gains.

  • Model independent analysis
  • Patented high concentration sizing using automatic correction for multiple scattering
  • 4 measurements per second of the complete particle size distribution based on thousands to millions of particles per minute
  • First principles measurement using rigorous Mie theory. No calibration required
  • Changeable lenses in the sensor allow configuration of instrument resolution to individual process needs
  • Watertight and dustproof to industrial protection rating IP65 (optical head to IP66)
  • Optical head and sample path certified to Pressure Shock Resistance of 11bar(a) (PSR11)
Process Interface

Robust, repeatable and representative sampling is the key to good measurement, making the process interface a critical part of the Insitec LPS.

Several measurement options are available:

  • directly in-line
  • on-line
  • at or off-line (no process interface supplied)

Continuous sampling:

For on-line applications, representative sampling of the process stream is achieved using a cross-cut sampling valve (choice of sample cuts from 0.98, 1.4, 1.9 and 2.5 cc) with pneumatic actuator and electrical control solenoid. Flow through the sample loop is continuous, eliminating a potential time-lag in the system and reducing the likelihood of blockages. All wetted parts are 316SS and PTFE.
Automation Interface
  • Full automation and integration into plant control systems
  • RTSizer software interfaces with plant control systems through Malvern Link automation package
  • Award-winning Intellution iFix SCADA license delivered with every process system. This gives enormous flexibility in controlling instrument, sampling system and linking to the plant control system
Laser diffraction - Established sensor technology Proven laser diffraction technology lies at the heart of the Insitec LPS system, which employs the well-established Malvern Insitec analyzer. The technique of laser diffraction is now the standard in most particulate processing industries and has been pioneered and developed by Malvern for more than 30 years. The robustness of the technique ensures that the Insitec sensor copes easily with the rigors and demands of an industrial process environment. The sensor's changeable lenses allow the tuning of the instrument resolution to the needs of the process. The instrument is watertight and dustproof, and certified to industrial protection rating IP65.

A rugged industrial solution

The Insitec LPS is designed from the outset for industrial use. Its rugged construction and robust technology reflect the exacting demands placed on analytical instrumentation that is in continuous use in a process environment. Capable of taking scattering patterns 4 times every second and delivering the particle size distribution in real-time, an Insitec LPS can make more than a million measurements every year. The instrument, the process interface, analysis software, automation and data reporting can all be customized to the unique needs of individual clients.

Sample dilution
  • A pre-diluter and cascade diluter work together to representatively reduce the concentration of the sample to an optimum level avoiding dilution shock
  • The prediluter is a glass chamber with pneumatic stirrer and level sensors for dilution volume control
  • The cascade diluter is a diluent driven patented design based on a coaxial venturi. Dilution ratio is controlled by the number of stages and the dimensions of internal flow nozzles
  • The prediluter and cascade diluter are self-cleaning with minimal moving parts
  • The design is optimized in each case to minimize diluent usage
  • Water requirements - 2 litres/min/cycle (min)/10 litres/min/cycle (max) during measurement at 2 bar. Water supply preferably bubble-free
