ISO 20847

Determination of sulfur content of automotive fuels

Download brochure

ISO 20847 is an international standard that specifies a method for the determination of sulfur content in automotive fuels using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry. This method is applicable to motor gasolines, including those containing up to 2.7% (m/m) oxygen, and to diesel fuels, including those containing up to 5% (V/V) fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), having sulfur contents in the range 30 mg/kg to 500 mg/kg.

The sulfur content of automotive fuels is an important factor that affects their emissions and performance. It can contribute to the formation of pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which can have harmful effects on human health and the environment. Therefore, it is important to be able to accurately measure.

ISO 20847 is a reliable and accurate method for measuring the sulfur content of automotive fuels. It is also a cost-effective method, making it a good choice for laboratories that need to analyze automotive fuels.

Our ISO 20847 Products

Take a look at the features and options available with our ISO 20847 compliant products below.

Epsilon 1 Sulfur in Fuels

The Epsilon 1 Sulfur in Fuels is a portable XRF instrument that is pre-calibrated for sulfur analysis in compliance with ISO 20847. It is easy to use and requires minimal sample preparation, making it a cost-effective solution for fuel analysis. It is also ideal for low mg/kg level chlorine in the presence of high-level sulfur, for example 1.5% as in crude oils and pyrolysis oils from plastic waste.

Features and benefits:

  • Pre-calibrated for sulfur analysis in compliance with ISO 20847
  • Easy to use and requires minimal sample preparation
  • Accurate and precise results
  • Cost-effective solution for fuel analysis

How it works:

  • The Epsilon 1 Sulfur in Fuels uses energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry to measure the elemental composition of fuels.
  • The instrument emits a beam of X-rays onto the sample, which causes the atoms in the sample to emit their own characteristic X-rays.
  • The energy of these X-rays is then used to identify and quantify the elements present in the sample.

Applications:

  • Analysis of sulfur in gasoline, diesel fuel, and other fuels
  • Compliance testing with environmental regulations
  • Quality control of fuel production
  • Research and development

Epsilon 1 for Ultra Low Sulfur

The Epsilon 1 for Ultra Low Sulfur is a portable XRF instrument that is pre-calibrated for sulfur analysis in fuels with sulfur contents below 15 mg/kg. It is easy to use and requires minimal sample preparation, making it a cost-effective solution for fuel analysis.

Features and benefits:

  • Pre-calibrated for sulfur analysis in fuels with sulfur contents below 15 mg/kg
  • Easy to use and requires minimal sample preparation
  • Accurate and precise results
  • Cost-effective solution for fuel analysis

How it works:

  • The Epsilon 1 for Ultra Low Sulfur uses the same EDXRF technology as the Epsilon 1 Sulfur in Fuels, but it is optimized for the analysis of fuels with very low sulfur content.
  • The instrument has a higher sensitivity for sulfur and can also handle samples with higher concentrations of other elements, such as chlorine.

Applications:

  • Analysis of ultra low sulfur diesel fuel (ULSD) and other fuels with low sulfur content
  • Compliance testing with environmental regulations
  • Quality control of fuel production
  • Low level chlorine in crude-, and pyrolysis-oils
  • Research and development

Epsilon 4 Oils & Fuels

The Epsilon 4 Oils & Fuels is a portable XRF instrument that can be used to analyze a wide range of elements in fuels, including sulfur, chlorine, nitrogen, and oxygen. It is easy to use and requires minimal sample preparation, making it a cost-effective solution for fuel analysis.

Features and benefits:

  • Pre-calibrated for the analysis of sulfur, chlorine, nitrogen, and oxygen in fuels
  • Can analyze a wide range of fuel types, including gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, and lubricants
  • Easy to use and requires minimal sample preparation
  • Accurate and precise results
  • Cost-effective solution for fuel analysis

How it works:

  • The Epsilon 4 Oils & Fuels uses the same EDXRF technology as the other two instruments, but it has a more advanced detector that can detect a wider range of elements.
  • The instrument also has a software package that allows users to analyze the data and generate reports.

Applications:

  • Analysis of sulfur, chlorine, nitrogen, and oxygen in fuels
  • Compliance testing with environmental regulations
  • Quality control of fuel production
  • Research and development
