Detection and counting of particles such as protein aggregates or nanoparticles is key to the characterization of many samples.

Archimedes is a true particle counter, detecting and characterizing each particle that passes through its sensor one by one, using the technology of resonant mass measurement.

Archimedes counts, analyzes and differentiates such materials as protein aggregates and silicone oil droplets within biopharmaceutical formulations, enabling researchers to study the stability of a biotherapeutic preparation under stress, and also to monitor the presence of impurities such as leached silicone oil in container closure studies. Such research is vital to establish the impact of contaminants on drug efficacy and also to elucidate their immunogenic potential. At the same time as Archimedes counts particles, it provides accurate, repeatable measurements of particle size and mass.

The Malvern NanoSight range uses nanoparticle tracking analysis to simultaneously measure particle concentration and size, providing accurate and reproducible information about your samples. The concentration or count of nanoparticles within a solution or system impacts their functionality, in particular nanoparticle efficacy and toxicity, and is important in areas such as:

  • Virus development and quality assurance
  • Extracellular vesicle studies in medical research
  • Registration under the EU Definition of Nanoparticles and other regulatory frameworks
  • Protein aggregation studies for parenterals
  • Environmental toxicology of nanoparticles

Malvern NanoSight instruments are also able to utilize fluorescence labeling or tagging to allow selective sizing and counting of suitably labeled particles in complex backgrounds, providing accurate and reproducible information on both size and concentration. Some examples of applications where fluorescence labeling may be useful include nanoparticle drug delivery, and investigation of small biological particles such as extracellular vesicles and virus like particles (VLPs).
