The most widely used geometries for making rheological measures with rotational rheometers are parallel-plate [PP] and cone and plate[CP]. Deciding which geometry to use usually depends upon the sample and accuracy of measurement.

Measuring samples with dynamic or electrophoretic light scattering on the Zetasizer Nano? Remember that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when the “results quality parameter” is “Good”? This presentation is not about that… Instead, it is about the “What happened here?” puzzled look when you see a red warning that tells you to “Refer to quality report”. It is about measuring the not so perfect sample and getting the not so perfect result, and then finding ways to improve them. Maybe not to perfection, but close!

In this presentation we will deal with the application of ultrasound energy frequently used to 'disperse' powdered samples in suspension. We will deal with the difficulties of specifying the absolute energy input in such systems (if a dispersed size is a measurement objective)and the requirement, therefore, to specify 'sonication to stability' as the effective mantra rather than a specified power for a set time duration. In this journey we will take in Reynold's Numbers, Lord Stokes, and the singing kettle.

The two main purposes of tests conducted on grease are to insure uniformity in the produce and to enable the prediction of lubricant performance. Grease is a rheological complex viscoelastic material formulated to meet a wide range of requirements. Tests normally performed by the grease industry are single point quality control tests, such as cone penetration, and dropping point. The wide range of temperatures and shear rates greases are subjected to make it act as a solid and a shear rate dependent fluid. Therefore, better test are needed to identify compositional and structural variations and possibly predict performance. This Web Seminar describes some of these test methods using rotational rheometers that pertain to more complete and accurate rheological characterization of lubricating greases.

This Web Seminar describes how rheology can be used to measure the thermodynamics of mixing of polymer solutions. In most solutions intermolecular interactions are different between like and unlike molecules, and the mixing process leads to an absorption or evolution of heat. Flory developed a theory in which the expansion of the chain is characterized by an expansion coefficient. The dependence of the change in hydrodynamic volume of solutes is related to the interaction parameter. Based on Le Chatelier’s Principle the temperature dependence of the hydrodynamic volume of the solute will determine if the heat of mixing is exothermal, endothermal or athermal. Test results of Polyacrylonitrile in electrolytic solvents will be presented.

Despite our best efforts to produce a robust method for sample measurement when using laser diffraction, things can go wrong! Given this, it is often asked how users reviewing data can determine if a measurement has been carried out correctly. In this presentation, we will cover the most common errors which can occurring during laser diffraction measurements. If you have any specific issues you would like us to cover, please email us with your before the presentation date.

Robert Richards was a Professor of Mining at MIT and lived for over 100 years. He provided early sampling theories based on earlier contributions by Vezin, Reed, and Brunton. We will explore his controversial modification of these theories and also talk about his first wife, Ellen Swallow Richards, for whom more recognition is finally coming about via the ACS, and who should be far better known for her many scientific and pioneering works.

Sylvanus Albert Reed (S A Reed) developed early sampling theories in 1882 and 1884 while at the Columbia School of Mines. However, he also wrote the classic book on the San Francisco Fire of 1906 while an insurance agent and went on to make his fortune by developing the metal propeller for aeroplanes. We will look at the life of this fascinating individual focusing on his contributions to early sampling theories.
