Using on-line particle size measurement to improve product quality

To improve product quality China vision Media Group Limited, formerly Shanghai Allied Cement (SAC) took the decision to switch from off-line measurement to on-line particle size analysis and automated process control at the company’s site in Shanghai. Although the factory already had a reputation for good product quality, an off-line analytical regime combining Blaine and sieve measurements was failing to accurately reflect plant behavior. Installing an Insitec on-line system and switching the grinding circuit separator to automated control generated significant product quality gains.

Initially SAC configured the Insitec to deliver a real-time Blaine measurement, however laboratory studies, in combination with plant data, revealed more sensitive correlations between compressive strength and specific size fractions. The set point for the mill is now defined in terms of percentage material in the 3 to 32 microns range. This operating strategy produces cement with a competitive advantage in terms of product quality: a narrower particle size distribution and more consistent short- and long-term strength. The simultaneous reduction in manual analysis has released operational staff for higher added value work.
