Robert Richards was a Professor of Mining at MIT and lived for over 100 years. He provided early sampling theories based on earlier contributions by Vezin, Reed, and Brunton. We will explore his controversial modification of these theories and also talk about his first wife, Ellen Swallow Richards, for whom more recognition is finally coming about via the ACS, and who should be far better known for her many scientific and pioneering works.
