Particle size is a critical control parameter in many different industries including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, coatings and mining. Particle size distribution plays a major role in determining the performance of the end product, so producing the correct particle size distribution is vital in those processes. As a result, PAT (process analytical technologies) are essential both for real-time quality control and for process understanding and development. This presentation introduces the spatial filter velocimetry technology (SFT) for inline particle size measurement in granulation and fluidized bed processes.

Using Rheology to Assess the Biodegradability and Compostability of Polylactic Acid ( PLA )
Day:Tuesday
Date:24 July 2012
Begin:10:30 am
End:11:30 am
Language:English
Time Zone:EDT
Audience:Worldwide
The commercial success and growth of polylactic acid products is mainly due to it biodegradability. The rate that it will degrade will not only depend upon its environment, but will also depend upon its chemical make up and morphology. The uses of PLA are expanding. Presently it is being used in food packaging, and numerous medical applications, such as sutures, artificial skin, and controlled drug delivery systems. Knowledge of the factors affecting the rate and mechanism of the degradation will be useful to design products with desire life cycle. Rheology is ideal for studying this degradation since the hydrolysis of the ester link causes a decrease in molecular weight of the polymer. Melt viscosity is very sensitive to small changes in molecular weight. Reported in this seminar is a study made to follow the degradation of solid PLA samples.

Enumeration and identification of particulate contaminants using the Morphologi G3-ID
Day:Tuesday
Date:07 August 2012
Begin:10:30 am
End:11:30 am
Language:English
Time Zone:EDT
Audience:Worldwide
Particle contamination can be a problem in most industrial processes. It can come from many sources including corroded or damaged parts of equipment, cross contamination in the process or from biological origin. The result of such contamination can range from cosmetic to dangerous depending on the situation therefore it is fundamental to identify the source, remove it and prevent it occurring again. The first step of which may be accomplished by isolating, characterising and chemically identifying the particles. In this webinar we look a novel instrument technology that combines automated imaging with Raman spectroscopy to allow the automated chemical identification of particulates as well as characterization of their size and shape. This instrument captures images of individual particles and then automatically analyses them using Raman spectroscopy to allow chemical classification of each particle selected for analysis. Once the particles have been classified chemically, a component specific property such as particle size or particle shape distribution can be measured for that component in isolation. Using this method it is possible to isolate and identify contaminant particles within a sample.
