The small size of nanoparticles is of utmost importance in order for them to maintain their unique optical, electronic, thermal and chemical properties. Measuring their size is therefore critical to understanding these nano-scale materials.
Zeta potential is another important parameter that is related to nanoparticle stability or aggregation in a dispersion, and can have significant implications on product performance.
Light scattering, especially dynamic light scattering, and electrophoretic light scattering are now the standard techniques for measuring the size and zeta potential of dispersed nanoparticles. Two new techniques, Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (NTA), and also Resonant Mass Measurement (RMM) can also be used for sizing nanoparticles as well as counting the number of particles present in a sample, and both are especially suited to polydisperse samples.
